Just a knee pain or Patellofemoral Pain syndrome? Know the difference here

Pain on the front of knee, in and around the kneecap is broadly defined as the patellofemoral
pain syndrome. It is also known as jumper’s knee or runner’s knee but it is not a sports related
pain always. As we receive lots of patients for knee pain treatment in Noida clinic.

The symptoms of patellofemoral pain syndrome are:

Pain in front of the knee joint

    Tenderness (pain to touch)

Pain after an episode of inactivity (getting up from a chair)

    Knee Stiffness

Difficulty climbing stairs and kneeling down

Reasons behind the cause of patellofemoral pain

syndrome are:

1. Overuse of the knee joint is one of the most common reason of the knee pain, for example
excess exercise or sudden increase in the usual exercise routine.
2. Usage of malaligned footwear which in turn leads to change in the alignment of the knee
leading to pain in knee joint
3. Sudden jerk can also lead to muscle tightness and thus pain and stiffness in the knee joint.
4. Quadriceps(muscle on the front of thigh) muscle weakness

Diagnosis

X-ray of the knee joint is performed to rule out any bone pathology.

Treatment of the patellofemoral pain syndrome

1. RICE method is used to alleviate pain in the first few days of the pain onset. RICE
stands for Rest, Ice, Compression and elevation of the parts.

2. Medications to decrease pain and inflammation is given

3. Lifestyle changes and exercises are advised

4. In severe cases the arthroscopy treatment is performed, most of the times lateral release
technique is performed. In this treatment a camera is inserted in the joint along with a
probe with which the tight tendon is released to decrease the muscle tightness.
