Knee Pain - Causes and Treatment!

Knee is a complex joint, essential for mobility as well as the stability of the body. As we age, the degeneration occurs in the joints as well, other than that, trauma and infections are also the causes of knee pain. Here, at my clinic, I receive lots of patients for knee pain treatment in Noida, Delhi NCR, India. So I decided to write an article on the same.

The most common causes of knee pain are as follows:

Osteoarthritis of knee joint

The Osteoarthritis of knee joint is the most common disease, especially after the age of 45 years. It is more common in females than males. In this disease, the articular cartilages of the knee get degenerated. Due to which the space between the bones decreases. This ultimately leads to friction while walking, changing positions and climbing stairs as well.
Treatment :  After confirming the disease from the x-ray, NSAIDs and physiotherapy treatment is prescribed. Surgical measures are taken only when the conservative ones fail.

Rheumatoid Arthritis of Knee Joint

The Rheumatoid arthritis is an auto-immune disorder, where the joint get inflamed and swollen. Various deformities occur in the joint if not treated in time. It mostly starts from the small joints like fingers and wrist etc.
Treatment : Anti rheumatic drugs are prescribed along with physiotherapy. Surgical measures are the last option.

Fracture 

Fracture of the bone is one of the most obvious causes, but it is not that obvious many times. As there is no history of a fall or possible reason behind a fracture most of the times. Some fractures like Tibial plateau fracture in the knee joint is most likely to be missed, if not observed by an experienced orthopedic surgeon.
Treatment : Cast/splint is applied after reducing the bone if required. Surgical fixation can be done to the unstable fractures.

Ligament injury 

This type of injury is common in the sports persons. As their knee is at more risk of twisting and turning which leads to the injury to the knee ligaments. ACL that is Anterior Cruciate ligament and PCL Posterior Cruciate Ligament are most likely to be injured.
Treatment : The Treatment of the ligament injury depends upon the grade of it. As grade 1 and grade 2 can be treated with conservative measures most of the times, but grade 3 require a surgical repair.

Osgood Schlatter Disease

It mostly occurs in the adolescent kids. The swelling and redness on the front of the knee is the main sign of this disease. As the shin bone (tibia) is inflamed due to the inflammation of  the patellar ligament. The pain increases with activity and decreases with rest.
Treatment : Rest, Ice along with anti inflammatory medicines and physiotherapy are the first lines of treatment.
